It all started with a friend that was working at a local psychiatric hospital asking me about my thoughts on behavioral patterns from domestic violence. I’m not going to cover the whole conversation, but what I wish for you is to find meaning in the consequences that domestic violence brings in our society.
For this project I needed a model that could understand the emotional significance of the project and will help me to bring to life the victim's story to the viewers. When talking to the model about it she got all fire-up, even angry about why things like this can happen to someone. Still, I knew she was going to be perfect for it. She possesses this life’s energy that can be felt when around her.
I wanted to create an image that will portray what happens when alone... those moments when a victim of domestic violence feels naked, stripped from their rights as human beings. One picture that will define the sets of emotional transitions that start occurring behind closed doors. I wanted to give the viewer (you) that moment in the life of the victim when he/she enters into a room, per se the bathroom to escape for an instant the realities of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse inflicted by a perpetrator. It is like traveling to two different worlds from one side of the house to another; - a place where the silent cry happens and gets buried among the walls of pain. Once the victim it's coming out from their alone place the transformation starts back to the reality of a dysfunctional environment.
It has been demonstrated that violent acts have livelong damaging effects on the victim's mind, body and soul. From an ecological point of view, family violence is a by-product of today's social, economic and political structure.
I hope you find meaning through my work. Take time out of your busy schedule to seek for more information about domestic violence, their consequences and the many ways you can help. Thanks! /jb
