Take time to evaluate the quality of your network

Written by

Often we get confused between a network of friends and professional friends and their networks. Were a network of friends is there to support you to become successful and not to hold you back.

Professional friends and their networks are for more challenging opportunities. People in a network of friends at times feel that their network should be of equals, but is a thought so far from the truth. If your networking efforts don’t seem to be going anywhere, you may need to evaluate the quality of your network.

Take some time to think about your network’s strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities. Without such an evaluation, there is little chance your network will adapt to your needs and your future goals. You may not notice how bound you are to history, or how certain connections of “friends” are holding you back. And you may miss opportunities to branch out and forge new ties that will help you move forward. This is not about losing your friends, is about you and your future. True friends will praise you for your motivation and decisions… or many years from now you will figure it out.

Taking inventory of your network and where it is lacking is time well spent. If you feel your network is out of date, or in the last year your quality of living degraded or did not grow at all, then it’s time to upgrade! Your mere awareness of your needs will help you connect with new and more relevant contacts and networks. And don’t forget to always follow up when meeting contacts on a new network!
